Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, sterile needles at specific locations on the body to promote health, prevent illness and treat a variety of medical conditions, including acute and chronic pain. Acupuncture can be used to treat digestive ailments, respiratory problems such as asthma or recurrent sinus infections, neurologic conditions including disk disease, and musculoskeletal concerns including knee, back or neck pain and arthritis.

Acupuncture needles activate nerve fibers to increase communication between the brain and spinal cord with the peripheral limb or organ, as well as to control glandular activity, digestion, immunity and nerve function. The needles also release tension from the muscles and surrounding tissues and activate endorphins which are important in regulating the perception of pain.

The number of treatments needed differs from patient to patient and may require one or two treatments weekly for several weeks. However, changes may often be seen within the first few treatments. Most side effects are mild and even pleasant – a sense of relaxation, an improvement in sleep, or improvement in digestion. Occasionally the patient may experience a temporary worsening of the symptoms before improvement is seen.

Evaluation of your pet and placement of the therapeutic acupuncture needles will be performed by a veterinarian certified in animal acupuncture. Treatment sessions typically last from 30-60 minutes, and your pet will be accompanied by an experienced staff member for the entire time the acupuncture needles are in place.

Health Certificates Tucson, AZ

Health Certificates

If you want to travel within the US with your pet, you need to plan ahead. Though every state has different requirements, most require a health certificate that is done by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. Luckily, we have a USDA-accredited veterinarian. If you are not a client, you need to make sure you bring your pets’ records in with you to the examination.

At the time of your pets’ examination, we will go over the forms that you need. There are times when we will have to run some tests to ensure that your pet is healthy enough for travel. We may also have to treat your pet prior to traveling.

You will always need a health certificate and proof of vaccination. You may also need a microchip and blood tests. Many states require that your pet get treated for parasites prior to travel. You may also need certificates for the airplane ride.

Since each state is different and we can’t stay up to date will all of the changes in each one, it is important that you call ahead and know what you need. Then, we will make sure that your pet is all ready to go!

Weight Management

Here at Rincon Vista Veterinary Clinic, we are proud to offer nutritional counseling to keep pets at healthy weights. If they are too big, we offer counseling to get your pets back to the weight they should be.

Obesity is a common problem for our pets. Many people enjoy giving their pets “people food” as a treat, but it is quite harmful for them. Overfeeding also makes pets too heavy. If you want healthy pets who live a long and happy lives,, you need to be careful about what they eat. Exercise is also necessary for a healthy life.

Obesity is a big problem. Recent studies show that more than 50 percent of dogs are obese. The rate is even higher in cats (60 percent). Birds, which don’t typically eat “people food,” are often obese because their owners leave food out for them all the time.

Cutting back on food is not always helpful because then your pets won’t get enough of the nutrients they need. Because of this, it is important to balance the amount of food with the amount of exercise to help your pets lose weight.

Sometimes a diet change is necessary, especially for older animals that are not as active. Many veterinarians recommend changing to a diet that is low in fat but still has plenty of protein and fiber. More often, owners need to adjust how they feed their pets, especially after they are neutered and start to become less active. They might not be able to leave food out all of the time and instead, start measuring the food and feeding meals. Sometimes, low-calorie food will help too.

Overweight animals, especially those that are obese, can have a lot of health problems. Their average lifespan is often a few years fewer than if they were at a healthy weight. For this reason, now is the time to make a change to give your pets the best chance at healthy lives.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to set up an appointment to talk about the weight of your pets, don’t hesitate to contact us today.

Heartworm Disease Detection, Prevention and Treatment

Here at Rincon Vista Veterinary Clinic, we are firm believers in heartworm prevention.

Because of our location, heartworm disease can be a big problem. So owners need to be educated about the disease and its prevention!

Heartworms can live in a dog’s heart for the worms’ entire lives. However, they do not make a dog sick until they are a full-grown adult, since they can grow up to twelve inches long. As adult worms, they live predominantly on the right side of the heart, causing heart failure and lung disease.

The treatment of heartworm can be as bad as the disease itself. As the adult worms die, they can cause problems. For this reason, a dog that is being treated needs to monitored closely. Sometimes, an additional treatment (or more) is necessary to cure the disease.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to prevent heartworms. There is a chewable tablet that needs to be given every month to prevent the disease. It is much easier to prevent the disease than to treat it and deal with the problems that occur with a heartworm infection. Giving a medication once a month is better than losing your pets to heart failure due to heartworms.

One other good thing about the prevention is that it takes care of intestinal parasites as well. This will keep both your pets and your family healthier.

If you have any questions about the disease or prevention, please contact us today at (520) 298-3319. If needed, we can schedule an appointment for a heartworm test so we can start your pets on preventative.
